Known for its fishing industry, this coastal city is best visited early in the morning when the local fisherfolk bring in the day’s catch on the iconic catamarans of Negombo, to sell at the famous Lellama – the local seafood market, abound with fascinating varieties of fish, and some of the best crabs found across Sri Lanka. Negombo’s history also lends the city its fond nickname of ‘Little Rome’, where a number of catholic churches and cathedrals were established by the Portuguese, while the Dutch have also left behind their legacy of a 17th century fort that now serves as the city prison

Today after breakfast proceed to Sigiriya.

En-route visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to the world’s largest troupe of captive, tamed and trained elephants. Either you could observe the baby elephants being bottled fed or enjoy the experience of bottle feeding the baby elephants. Close-up encounters with orphaned elephants at Pinnawala will be a memory that will stay with you for a life time. Thereafter, continue your journey to Kandy.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated North-west of the town of Kegalle. There are about 84 Elephants under protection. The Orphanage is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankans and foreign tourists.

It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. This 24 acres large elephant orphanage is also a breeding place for Elephants. It has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the world. The Orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers. In most of these cases, the mother had either died or been killed. Pinnawala has now become one of the bigger Orphanages and is quite well-known worldwide.
